Winter Rule of Thumb:  How many centimeters of snow are the equivalent of 1 centimeter of rain?

An approximate ratio of snow to water is 10 to 1. Therfore, there will be 10cm of snow for the 1 centimeter of rain.

10 centimeters. Snow density varies from 2% or 3% (that luscious white smoke) to 15% or 20% in the maritime ranges. So the correct answer could be as much as 50cm and as little as 5cm or less. Though 10% is often used as a rule of thumb, it isn't even a good average because it depends so much on what mountain climate you're in and what altitude you're at.

I think, like Michael that the approximate ratio is 10

though it will depend upon type of snow (calibration), rule of thumb answer is 10cm
